Knowing Who You Are

Self-empowerment is one familiar two-word term that had been tossed around by philosophers, charlatans, self-styled self-help gurus for many years since. One sometimes gets a glimpse of what it means although nobody seemed to nail it down to be able to mentally digest it to work.

Asking around five people can yield five different answers, all plausible, all-encompassing and all seemingly fitted to the definition of what self-empowerment is. The probable answer is that the experience of one person is quite often different from the other.

Through the years, here is what we have grasped of what it means, however simplistic it can be.

Taking control

From our corner, the general meaning of self-empowerment is taking control of our lives. This we do, in the modern sense, in order to set goals and make positive choices.

It essentially means we have to understand our strengths and our weaknesses. Most important is that we have to have belief in ourselves.

Stepping back

In a sense, it is also a practice in self-control, the ability to step back and look at the bigger picture. This productive attitude happens because you already know you have the power in considering other different thoughts about the circumstances.

Finally, you decide on purpose how you want to think and feel. The decision to step back is to maintain an open mind and consider different options. You then move forward with confidence.

Other perspectives

For others, self-empowerment is standing up to one’s beliefs and doing actions around those beliefs to the best of one’s ability.

A new addition is the “hunger” attitude. This is translatable to being hungry after self-empowerment. The arts, business, sports, and personal development have articulated it for the most part of one’s life journey: hunger for success, hunger to achieve more, hunger to overcome challenges one meets every day, and hunger to do the right thing.

One’s personal picture

For still others, there is the belief that confidence and self-empowerment go hand in hand.

There is still that question, however, of whether having self-empowerment can build confidence or that confidence can make us feel empowered to do things.

For teachers, for instance, self-empowerment is finding the ability to establish an efficient, well-behaved classroom. There is no need to raise one’s voice or deal with major disciplinary issues for the simple reason that you have command of your entire classroom.

On the other hand, a doctor will finally see that self-empowerment is the ability to maintain calm clarity during the most intense of situations during actual work. It also means the practice of self-forgiveness for circumstances out of one’s control.

Communication

Self -empowerment is sometimes seen as the ability of communication and how one uses it to empower the others and work as one. Self-empowerment might suggest a go-it-along mentality, but isolation can be detrimental.

While self-empowerment often suggests a go-it-alone mentality, it’s important to remember that isolation can also be a detriment to our progress. It means having the confidence in asking for help when needed because it leads to healthier relationships with integrity, honesty and being open.
